8 ways to improve your English language skills

If you are an English language learner and you want to attend TOEFL or IELTS exam, you need to improve your English language skills. These tests can help you improve your abilities to have a better awareness of these tests. However, learners seek to utilize the language outside the class and in real situations. In this article, I will provide you with some techniques you can use to improve your English language skills and become a native-like speaker.

English skills are divided into two categories: receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (speaking and writing). Receptive skills are also called input because the learner is exposed to the language. On the other hand, productive skills are called output because they require production or using the language either verbally or written.

There are 8 methods to improve your four English language skills in an easy and fun way:

1. Read books and articles in English on the web. I can assure you that you have read a lot of books, stories, and articles in your mother language. However, you can start with short stories, even lower-level ones. You can read more at a higher level as you go through. This method will help your brain to attach the vocabulary meaning along with pictures and to have a better understanding of English sentence structure and grammar.

2. Create an English atmosphere around you. It’s very important to make your room or house a room in the USA or the UK. To elaborate more, you can practice speaking English with people around you at home, create a picture dictionary for the vocabulary around you, listen to English news, and switch your laptop’s or cell phone’s operating system language into English.

3. Watch films in English. Watching films on YouTube or Netflix will not help your academic or formal skills. However, you will have the ability to understand the language better, use informal lexis in conversations, and get the feeling of the language.

4. Join voice chat. Technology has come a long way when it comes to social networking, so you can find a chat room anywhere you live to join.

5. Speak and record yourself. This may sound strange, but it will help you see how you can improve by repeating the recording many times until you are satisfied with the result.

6. Talk to classmates in English in your spare time. You can even form a group to play games, eat or just chat with each other.

7. Write your comments on English websites and blogs. Currently, blogs are websites similar to magazines. Many people use them to express their thoughts on a subject or to explain things - from knitting scarves to very complex scarves dealing with technical or philosophical subjects. What all these blogs have in common is that they are interactive: readers can comment on or discuss ideas expressed in the blog. Even if you're not a fan of blogging, you may find some content that will encourage you to get involved. So just do it. You don't have to be an expert to write a few sentences about your thoughts or feelings about blog content.

8. Write down new words and expressions. It is a great way to practice writing in your notebook even with simple words along with their meaning in English or your mother language. It will help you to memorize them later on.

All of the above tips boil down to one: practice, practice, practice! No matter how you learn it, no matter what your native language is, the key to learning and mastering a foreign language is to practice it as often as possible.
